Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef preferably 80/20
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger grated or minced
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce or tamari for gluten-free
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes optional
  • 2 cups cooked white rice jasmine or basmati
  • 3 green onions sliced
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds for garnish
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Equipment

  • Large Skillet
  • Rice cooker or pot
  • Wooden spoon

Method

  1. Cook the rice according to package directions. Set aside and keep warm.
  2. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook for 5-7 minutes, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon until browned.
  3. Drain excess fat if needed. Push the beef to the sides and add the garlic and ginger to the center. Cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Stir in the soy sauce, sesame oil, and brown sugar. Mix well and simmer for 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens and coats the beef.
  5. Add red pepper flakes if using. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Divide the rice among 4 bowls. Top with the beef mixture.
  7. Garnish with green onions and sesame seeds. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Use 80/20 ground beef for the best flavor and moisture
  • Don't skip browning the beef properly for maximum flavor
  • Fresh garlic and ginger make a noticeable difference over jarred versions
  • Add vegetables like broccoli, carrots, or snap peas for extra nutrition
  • Top with a fried egg for added richness
